FIFUR’s sustainability seminar shed light on fur sector’s sustainability projects and vision for the future in Musiikkitalo, Helsinki, and as a webinar

2.6.2022
The seminar on 10 May 2022 provided an interesting overview of the current sustainability projects in the fur industry and a look at the future of fur farming.

Member of Parliament Joakim Strand gave the Parliament’s greetings at the event. “I very much believe in the future of the fur industry”, he said in his speech. “Finally, people start to understand what is meant by domesticity, self-sufficiency, primary production, energy, circular economy in connection with all this, where you have already been a forerunner for a long time”, said Strand.

In her speech, project manager Maarit Hellstedt from the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry reviewed the objectives of the government programme — measures to, inter alia, combat climate change and support the circular economy. She noted that FIFUR’s Research Director Jussi Peura presented many issues that support these objectives.

“Continuous improvement of animal welfare and environmental responsibility are absolute prerequisites for success and social concession in the fur sector”, stressed FIFUR’s CEO Marja Tiura. In the fur sector, circular economy has been implemented for decades already. The final product, a true, durable, and easy to reshape fur, is an excellent alternative to fast fashion.

In addition, the seminar covered COVID-19 protection measures and vaccination, as well as the latest developments in the areas of certification and traceability.

We would like to thank those who spoke at the event for their interesting speeches and participants for a good discussion.
